Creating Your Dream House Now : A Kitchen Renovation

  • One of my favorite recent projects was working with a family on making their dream kitchen come to life...
  • I had seen the original kitchen when the family first bought the ranch style house a few years back. Built in the 1950s, the original kitchen was small and didn’t offer up very much workable space with its typical appliances taking up space, as well as the washer and dryer being in there too...
  • In the end, it didn’t fit the lifestyle of this young, modern family...
  • However, as with most homeowner’s, other things take priority in life and certain home projects take the back burner. When the time was right, we started talking about what they hoped to create for their space...
  • It became a question of either working within the footprint of the existing kitchen space and making it better on a smaller scale or planning a larger renovation that would expand that footprint and be the dream kitchen they had always wanted with some extra room to move around...
  • As with most homeowners, the question you have to ask yourself – “Do you plan on staying in this home for many years or is it short term?”
  • Certainly, doing a smaller scale renovation project within the existing footprint of the space is less expensive...
  • Adding new cabinets and countertops, new flooring and bringing in new appliances could give the small kitchen a modern look and be more visually appealing. This is a great thing if you are thinking about selling your home in the next few years, as kitchens and bathrooms do add value to your house...
  • In this case, the family wanted to stay put and decided to make this their dream house - now. They were in a great location with great schools and the house had good bones to expand upon...
  • That is a question to ask yourself too – “Can the house you are living in now potentially be your dream home with a few changes?”
  • Sometimes the layout may not be exactly as you had hoped or certain details might not be dream material but are there things that can be moved around and updated to really make your present home – dream home material?
  • Thinking about doing your own renovation? Here are some products I incorporated into this renovation project after much research. I share them here with you because a renovation is all about making decisions – many decisions – and that is something that can be daunting for most homeowners.
  • If you keep your goal in mind of what you want, you can make smart choices as you bring it all together. Renovations can be stressful, but they do not have to be. It's a matter of staying organized and knowing what you want in the end.
  • The bottom line for home renovations; think about how long you want to be in your present home...
  • Kitchens and bathroom renovations will add value and interest to your home down the road...
  • If you are staying in your present house for a longer period, why do you have to put off having your dream house…make the home you have now the house you dreamed of...
